Many practices focus on the physical aspects of pediatrics, but not on the holistic view that encompasses the child’s family & social environment as well. Hannah Martin2 StarI used to be a patient; when I was newly 18 I developed an ED and had yet to be diagnosed when I came in to get a checkup. Dr. Sue was unaware of ED protocol and demanded I gain five to ten pounds in the next week and come back in. For context, I had lost about 50 lbs in 4 months, so gaining weight back was extremely hard, let alone 5-10 lbs in several days. On top of that, collectively, the nurses and Dr. Sue were extremely abrasive. They were extremely apathetic to my situation, I was scared for my health, about myself leaving for college, etc and they demanded I strip down to be weighed. I don’t know if you’ve had to do that, but when I questioned why, the nurse looked at me, slightly shocked, and said “You haven’t done this before?” Long story short, at the start of my ED this place was extremely apathetic, impersonal, and gave me the impression that I was sick, and worrisome, and irresponsible for “allowing” that to happen. To end the story, I was yelled at and kicked out of the office. Moral of the story: don’t expect them to care about your mental health. Have a great day.Tuesday 17th August 2021
